Barb Mature Model

Barbed goatgrass grows 8 to 16 inches tall with few to many culms. Leaf sheaths contain white hairs when young, becoming more or less smooth once matured. The blades are rigid, sharp, and spreading. Immature spikes are often reddish or purplish. Mature spikes are cylindrical and disperse from the parent plant as joined units at maturity, eventually breaking down to release their seeds. Grains are 1/4 inch long, resembling a wheat kernel.

When mature, barbed goatgrass is unpalatable to livestock and can cause injury to grazing animals. Goatgrass infestations can reduce forage quality and quantity by 50 to 75 percent. Because livestock tend to avoid this weedy grass dense stands form that push out natives and desirable forage. Barbed goatgrass is an agricultural concern since it can readily cross with wheat, producing sterile seed and unmarketable wheat.

This shows the difference between the male and female coloration. The female is the top fish in this photo. Females don't possess the red stripe, and show both spots on their side. Males lose the 2nd spot near the tail as they mature.

Thanks to the generosity of our Architect Julie Burroughs, in 2017, we embarked upon a plan to increase and upgrade our Palatine facility. The new addition opened in early 2020 and includes space for mature and special needs cats, and a separate location for kittens and their Moms. Additional construction continues into PHASE II during 2021-2022.

The Tinfoil Barb is a fish that is often available in pet shops and sold to the beginning aquarist but it is not the best choice for those just starting in the freshwater hobby. The tinfoil barb requires a very large tank, at least 75 gallons (284 liters) for one and a much larger aquarium when keeping these barbs in multiples because of their potential adult size of 13 inches (32 cm).

The sides of the Tin foil Barb resemble tin foil (hence the name) and the fins on the this barb will become more red as they mature. Juveniles (pictured below) lack the red on the fins. The second picture is of a mature tinfoil barb that is around 10 inches in size.

The 6 to 10 days it takes to create a healthy and mature sourdough starter from scratch requires slightly more attention to "death threats," because a fledgling starter hasn't yet developed the defenses that characterize a mature starter. But once your starter is fully developed, it's really pretty darn hard to kill.

Feathers are dead structures that cannot repair themselves when damaged. Because a healthy and functional coat is critical to survival, each year birds shed their old feathers and then grow a whole new set. This moltingmoltin birds, the process of losing and regrowing feathers on a regular cycle process is a carefully timed affair in which feathers are shed and regenerate in turn over a period of weeks so the bird can maintain its protective outer layer and ability to fly. Once the new set of feathers has matured, molt is complete and new growth only occurs before the next molt cycle when feathers are accidentally lost.

Barb has been with Baptist Senior Services since 2010. Prior to joining Providence at Home in 2021, Barb worked at Providence Point Life Plan community. Helping mature adults find a home in the community turned into a real passion for Barb.

Picea engelmannii 'Lil Barb' is an irregular-globose, dwarf selection of Engelmann spruce with asymmetrical branching, and very attractive sky-Blue needles. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 10 inches (25 cm) tall and 15 inches (35 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 - 5 cm).

Puntius ticto is a freshwater barb with commercial importance in India. It is soft and wild fish, highly prone to parasitic infections. The present article describes, morphological and morphometric details of the new species of Myxidium identified as Myxidium tictoi n.sp. from the kidney of Puntius ticto. Plasmodia were histozoic and embedded in the kidney. The intensity of infection was high. Mature spores were elongated, typically fusiform in shape with blunt pointed ends measuring 11.53-14.21 (13.10 0.53) 4.13-5.37 (4.67 0.27) μm in size. The present species was compared with species found from the same organ and other resembling species as M. rhodei, M. misgurni, M. pseudobagrusi, M. aristichthysi, M. sangei, M. cruzi. Up till now, there is no evidence of any Myxidium species reported from Puntius ticto worldwide.

The role of chemoreception in mate choice was studied in barbs of the complex Barbus intermedius from Lake Tana. It was found that chemical communication may be used in reproductive interactions of the barbs, and that males are responsible for the choice. Mature males tend to prefer ripe females and avoid both immature females and mature males, or are indifferent to them. It was shown that selectivity in mate choice by certain barb morphotypes could reduce the probability of interbreeding between different morphotypes, but not provide for reproductive isolation between them. It was hypothesized that the mate groups are finally formed as a result of direct interactions between potential partners, mediated by tactile reception or specific behavioral patterns.

As with any barb, keeping a sizable group is strongly recommended. Breeding is certainly possible in captivity for this egg-scatterer, though it seems that few have documented their efforts with this species. In general, P. phutunio is a rarity in the home aquarium, despite being a common fish in South Asia. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and for those with the discerning eye to appreciate the subtle charms of this humble little barb, there is much to be had here.

Technical Abstract: Nesfatin-1, a product of the nucleobindin 2 (NUCB2) gene, purportedly plays important roles in whole-body energy homeostasis. Experiments were conducted to determine how NUCB2 expression in fat depots may be controlled in the pig and to test the hypothesis that nesfatin-1 regulates appetite and LH secretion in the gilt. Prepubertal gilts were used to study expression of NUCB2 in fat and the effects of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of nesfatin-1 on food intake and pituitary hormone secretion. Growing pigs (gilts and barrows at 22 wk of age, n = 1,145) or sexually mature gilts (n = 439) were used to test association of SNP in the NUCB2 gene with growth traits. The expression of NUCB2 was similar for subcutaneous fat compared with perirenal fat. An i.c.v. injection of the melanocortin-4 receptor agonist [Nle**4, d-Phe**7]-alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone did not alter expression of NUCB2 mRNA in the hypothalamus but reduced (P = 0.056) NUCB2 mRNA expression in subcutaneous fat. Short-term (7 d) submaintenance feeding reduced (P

The extraordinary diversity of angiosperms is linked to reproductive strategies that enhance genetic variability by promoting outcrossing. Although outcrossing provides numerous benefits and is essential for hybrid seed production, self-pollination can facilitate efficient crop production. Using two Asteraceae crops as model systems, a diverse team (UC Davis: PI Harmer; UC Berkeley: co-PI Blackman; Iowa State: co-PI Barb) will investigate howexternal and internal factors interact to modulate these distinct reproductive strategies via influence on the timing of late-stage floral development. In primarily outcrossing sunflower, many individual florets are bundled into a single tightly packed disk, and rings of florets synchronously mature on successive days. Each floret presents pollen one day and exserts its stigmas on the next. Preliminary data show theprogress from unopened buds through a male reproductive phase to a female phase is regulated both by the circadian clock and the environment. In lettuce, which is almost entirely self-pollinating, floret morphology is similar, but the male and female phases occur simultaneously. Moreover, unlike sunflower heads, lettuce disks open and close in daily cycles driven by rhythms in corolla elongation. The proposed research will investigate mechanisms that regulate the development of these floral traits to understand how different reproductive strategies emerge and succeed in fluctuating environments. Physiological experiments will define how environmental and internal cues direct floral organ growth to promote outcrossing or selfing. Comparative transcriptomic studies will identify pathways controlling the timing of late-stage floral development. Finally, quantitative genomic studies will reveal the genetic architecture of variation that affects floret maturation and its impact on self- and cross-pollination. 041b061a72
