Knife Threat Analysis, Attached to the Throat: In Top Israeli Methods for Self-Defense

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

In this article, we will discuss the analysis of the threat of a knife attached to the throat, using various Israeli methods of self-defense, such as the KALAH Combat System, and Krav-Maga. When the goal is not to find out who is better but to show the collection of options available. Here are some questions we would like to answer: What is the scenario of attaching the knife to the throat? How does the Israeli KALAH method deal with this scenario? How does an Israeli Krav-Maga deal with this scenario? What types of training knives and protective equipment are used in self-defense training? What types of real assault knives are there?

What is the scenario of attaching the knife to the throat?

Attaching the knife to the throat occurs for a very simple reason, the attacker threatening the life of the victim to achieve his demand. In terms of the scenario, a threat can be from any angle around the victim when, the attacker holds the victim in one hand and with the other hand threatens with the knife from the front, back, or sides; There are common cases when this threat is carried out in motion, i.e. the attacker also holds with one hand, threatens with the other hand holding the knife and performs a kind of push (Going along with the victim); There are also cases of pushing on the wall and threatening with the knife.

In this article, we want to introduce different techniques of self-defense against threats. When we will focus on frontal threat scenarios. We will analyze a situation when the knife is attached with the right hand to the left side of the throat (On the opposite side to the hand); And in the second possible scenario, when the knife is attached with the attacker's right hand to the right side of the throat (victim). We will try to explain these situations and technical solutions by two Top Israeli methods of self-defense.

How does the Israeli KALAH method deal with this scenario?

First sub-scenario attaching the knife with the right hand (the attacker) to the left side of the throat (victim):

The victim will raise the hands slowly upwards when in the KALAH method unlike other methods (shown below) the hands are close together, close to each other and the left hand must be near to the inside of the attacker's wrist! The victim will try to explain by his actions to the attacker, that he has surrendered to his demands "Please take everything just do not hurt me". At the right time, when the attacker is engaged in robbery, using a hand opposite the knife, move the knife away with a nimble and powerful movement of the left hand, raise it slightly and place his right hand under the opponent's arm to lock it, with stepping with his right foot towards the attacker (To reduce the distance). Later in the exercise, the left-hand lock the opponent's forearm to neutralize the knife's ability to hit him by pulling it out. Later in the exercise, neutralization blows are performed using the victim's knees towards the opponent's crotch and abdomen, until he lets go of the knife. The exercise can be completed by unloading the knife from the attacker's hand; Continued takeover for the purpose of making a civil arrest or in case a person is unfamiliar with takeover scenarios from an Israeli Krav-Maga curriculum, then it is better to leave the scene soon.

The explanation why a knife neutralization exercise attached to a throat does not works

An important note of Idan: Through the video above, a technique was performed that was supposed to neutralize the threat of a knife attached to the throat. When in the scenario the attacker was asked to be determined in an attempt to stab the victim. That is, the attacker holds a powerful knife close to his throat and threatens. Idan tries to neutralize a knife threat according to another method of self-defense by raising his hands up and pulling powerfully down with both hands on the forearm (hand holding the knife). As can be seen in the video above the attempt wasn't unsuccessful, and immediately the attacker was released from the lock of Idan's hand and a further stab came to his throat. Idan adds with an explanation that the attacker, in this case, can hit with his left hand, also he explains that in the exercise suggested by him the attacker can also hit with his left hand, and immediately Idan returns with another question, so where for the attacker is harder to hit? And immediately in his explanation, it can be seen that in the exercise offered by him, he is really close to the attacker, and the attacker's hand with the knife is locked using both his hands. When the victim's left hand is around the attacker's forearm, and in this short period of time the victim's right hand can be released to perform head protection and perform neutralization blows to the attacker's weak areas.

Second sub-scenario attaching the knife with the right hand (the attacker) to the right side of the throat (victim):

The victim will simultaneously pull the head with the whole body back and to the right side; At the same time, the right hand enters under the arm joint and locks it by attaching it to his shoulder with the hand, however, the left hand grasps the forearm, close to the right wrist (of the attacker) and attaches to his body (the victim). Later in the exercise, the attacker is taken over, with the tremendous force exerted on the right hand (holding a knife); With taking all the weight on the attacker's shoulder and attempting through a rotary motion to lower the attacker with continued neutralizing blows to the face, throat, eyes, etc ... These actions continue until the attacker releases the grip of the knife. The exercise can be completed by unloading the knife from the attacker's hand; Continued takeover for the purpose of making a civil arrest or in case a person is unfamiliar with takeover scenarios from an Israeli Krav-Maga curriculum, then it is better to leave the scene soon of event.

An important note of the Idan: Do not pull the knife with the right hand towards the bottom left, the reason for this: is the main artery or throat can be easily cut; Provided that the victim has survived, there is a high chance that the attacker will stab directly his body, after all, his body (the victim) is open.

How does an Israeli Krav-Maga deal with this scenario?

First sub-scenario attaching the knife with the right hand (the attacker) to the left side of the throat (victim):

The victim will raise his hands slowly upwards, and will try to explain to the attacker that he has surrendered to his demand "Please take everything just do not hurt me". At the right time, when the attacker is engaged in robbery, using a hand opposite the knife (left) will catch the connection area of the thumb and wrist. And by pulling down he will press his hand to the body. Simultaneously with this action, it is mandatory to perform neutralizing blows to the jaw, throat, and eyes of the opponent and combine with knee blows to the groin and abdomen area. Both of these actions continue until the attacker releases the grip of the knife. The exercise can be completed only after discharging the knife from the attacker's hand; Continued takeover for the purpose of making a civil arrest or in case a person is unfamiliar with takeover scenarios from an Israeli Krav-Maga curriculum, then it is better to leave the scene of the event soon.

Second sub-scenario attaching the knife with the right hand (the attacker) to the right side of the throat (victim):

The victim will raise his hands slowly upwards, and will try to convey to the attacker that he has surrendered to his demand "Please take everything just do not hurt me". At the appropriate time, when the attacker is engaged in robbery, using a hand opposite the knife (left) will grab the wrist, and by pulling down will lock his hand near his (victim) right leg. Simultaneously with this action, it is mandatory to perform neutralizing blows to the jaw, throat, and eyes of the opponent.

What types of training knives and protective equipment are used in Self-Defense training?

It is very important to practice Self-Defense using rubber training knives and even more important during training to wear appropriate protective equipment: such as glasses designed to protect the eyes; a body protector; a Head guard against receiving an unwanted blow. The following is a list of recommended equipment for knife defense studies:

What types of real assault knives exist?

Warning!: Real and dangerous combat knives have been attached below, do not use them for training purposes! Do not use them to intentionally hurt someone! They are for illustration only! That is, to recognize existing threats and be prepared for them! The following is a list of real attack knives for illustration only (there are dozens of different types of attack knives):

What are the recommended books to read, on the subject of knives?

Dear friends, if you are reading this article I guess you like the subject of knives. As a result, I will share with you a number of books on this subject that I have personally read and been very impressed with. You will ask and rightly so, why are they not only about an Israeli KALAH Combat System? My answer is simple, I believe that for survival any self-defense technique is good! As much as it is applicable and useful! In our Facebook Group, we are talking about applicable self-defense, and what is good about it is that the method has no meaning at all, but the application of realistic exercises for effective self-defense! As a result, the books are also from different fighting methods regarding knives. I hope you will enjoy them.
