Stick Blow Analysis From Above: In Top Israeli Methods for Self-Defense, Second Article

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

In this article, we will try to answer the following questions: How do deal with a stick blow from above diagonally in an Israeli Krav-Maga Combat System? How do deal with a stick blow from above diagonally in Israeli KALAH Combat System? How do disarm the stick from an opponent by Krav-Maga & KALAH? How important is personal protective equipment when practicing Self-Defense? With what equipment is it recommended to practice Self-Defense at home? How important is cardiopulmonary endurance in Self-Defense workouts? We will compare two top Israeli methods for self-defense on the subject of a blow from above. That is, between Krav-Maga and KALAH. When the purpose of the article, is not to say what is the better way but for the sake of recognizing different ways of self-defense against this threat. This article is a natural continuation of our previous article on the topic of Top Self-Defense techniques from stick attack: In Israeli Krav-Maga, the first article, therefore it is recommended to read it before this article.

How do deal with a stick blow from above diagonally in an Israeli Krav-Maga Combat System?

A stick attack scenario from a diagonal top on the right side of the attacker: The victim's goal is to get as close to the attacker as possible at the appropriate time when the stick is at the top end of his trajectory. Important Note: Any delay in entering this exercise will cause the stick to hit the body with dangerous force. So let's see how the exercise is performed. That is, at the right time a quick, agile, determined, and powerful entry with a counter-foot next to the attacker towards the enemy (if he is attacking with the right hand, enter with the right foot). When the right hand holding the stick should be at the victim's counter-attack somewhere near the victim's opposite shoulder, i.e. outside the area of injury of the stick. Here are some response scenarios from the victim's side:

  • Scenario A: The hands when entering in the form of a sharp-headed pencil are close together, with the head down between the shoulders. A quick, agile and powerful entry is made, similar to a break-in, towards the attacker. When a hand holding the attacker's stick is supposed to slide through the victim's left forearm. Important Note: When entering in the form of a sharp-headed pencil, one's head should be as far down as possible, with the shoulders guarding it. So later in this exercise, the left hand of the victim locks the forearm of the attacking hand and at the same time neutralization blows are performed to the face with the right hand. When one can also combine knee blows toward the abdomen of the attacker. The goal is to release the grip of the stick, using a sharp, rotating motion inward, with the left shoulder disarming the stick from the attacker's hand.

  • Scenario B: The victim blocks the attacking hand with the stick with two forearms in parallel. Footwork is of paramount importance because the victim is standing at an angle of almost ninety degrees toward the attacker. When, the left hand has locked the forearm of the attacking hand by performing parallel neutralizing blows to the face, and performing throwing the attacker to the ground. Technically throwing to the ground is performed by inserting the right leg and the entire waist of the victim behind the right leg of the attacker with the grip of the attacker's neck. Next, a rotational movement is made to the left - down. After performing this exercise the attacker is on the ground. At this stage, neutralization blows can be performed when the attacker's arm is locked between the victim's hand and thigh. Although a skilled person in a Krav-Maga / KALAH Combat Systems can make a civil arrest of the attacker and call the police forces for further legal treatment of the incident.

  • Scenario C: The victim brakes by reducing the distance to zero range in front of the attacker. The footwork is of paramount importance because the victim stands at an angle of almost one hundred and eighty degrees towards the attacker while performing a rotary motion along with the opponent. When the left-hand lock the forearm of the attacking hand while performing parallel neutralization blows to the jaw and groin. Taking control of the arm allows the victim to grab the attacker's neck with the right hand and by pressing it - down to activate the attacker on the ground. At this point, neutralization blows can be performed when the attacker's arm is locked between the victim's hand and thigh. Later in the exercise, done the submission on the ground, when it must be noted that a person who is not skilled in a Krav-Maga / KALAH Combat Systems in general and in-ground takeover scenarios in particular, it is better at this stage to leave the scene of the incident. Although a skilled person in a Krav-Maga / KALAH Combat Systems can make a civil arrest of the attacker and call the police for further legal treatment of the incident.

How do deal with a stick blow from above diagonally in Israeli KALAH Combat System?

The hands at the entrance (victim) are bent and raised up to keep the victim's face. Similar to a Krav-Maga, an entry is made with the right foot towards the attacker, and the goal at this stage is the same, to reduce to zero range and even in the initial stage to give a neutralization blow with the elbow to the attacker's jaw. When, in the second stage similar to a Krav-Maga must be carried out using the left hand of the victim, and the forearm lock of the attacking hand. There are scenarios where this attack is performed with two hands so in this case the locking was done on the same two hands, at this point the victim's left-hand locks the forearm, and at the same time, the right hand performs neutralization blows with the elbow combined with kicks to the attacker's weak points.

Idan's note: He points out that using Krav-Maga's techniques, see our earlier article (Top Self-Defense techniques from stick attack: In Israeli Krav-Maga, the first article), the chance of the stick hitting the head or face is higher, i.e. the penetration of the stick may go in between two close hands (sharp-headed pencil method, and in others ...).

How do disarm the stick from an opponent by KALAH?

The process of disarming the stick is different when the attack with the stick was performed with one hand or with both hands. Below we discuss these two scenarios in detail.

Scenario A: stick attack from the top and diagonal with both hands from the right side:

Taking control of the arms allows the victim with the right hand to perform neutralization blows when the attacker's arms are locked. In the next step, the victim's right-hand pushes from below - up to the attacker's elbow, with a backward movement. At this point, neutralization blows can be performed when the attacker's arm is locked between the victim's hand and thigh. When, successful completion of the exercise allows to disarm the stick and perform one of two: Submission on the ground when it must be noted that a person who is not skilled in Krav-Maga / KALAH combat system in general and in submission technique on the ground in particular, it is better to leave the scene of the event; Although a skilled person in a Krav-Maga / KALAH combat system can make a civil arrest of the attacker and call the police for further legal treatment of the incident.

Scenario B: Stick attack from the top and diagonal with the right hand only:

At the point where the attacker is neutralized due to blows with elbows and kicks at the weak points, the victim's left hand holds the middle of the attacking hand with a stick. Then, the victim's right hand must take over the attacker's arm.

Sub-scenario A: Grasping the attacker's jaw

Taking control of the arm allows the victim to grasp the jaw of the attacker with the right hand and by using a rotary motion to perform a hand lock along with the neck lock. When at this point the victim is behind the attacker with complete control over him. This move will disarm the stick from his hand and later in the exercise, it will be possible to hit the neck with a push and walk away from the scene of the incident.

Sub-scenario B: Grasping the attacker's neck

Taking control of the arm allows the victim to grab the attacker's neck with the right hand and by pressing it - down to activate the attacker on the ground. At this point, neutralization blows can be performed when the attacker's arm is locked between the victim's hand and thigh. Later in the exercise, submission on the ground, when it must be noted that a person who is not skilled in the Krav-Maga / KALAH combat system in general and in the ground submission scenarios in particular, it is better at this moment to leave the scene of the incident. Although a skilled person in the Krav-Maga / KALAH combat system can make a civil arrest of the attacker and call the police for further legal treatment of the incident.

Idan's note: In Krav-Maga, the stick disarming process is done in two steps: Step A. Rotate in and out with the whole body when the stick is among the victim's left hand and ribs. Step B. Move back to disarm the stick. When the process is successful the stick will remain with the victim locked between his ribs and hand close to the heart. When Idan adds, if it's an iron stick or something sharp, the victim can cut the hand or the ribs.

How important is personal protective equipment when practicing Self-Defense?

Good schools understand the importance of protective equipment when teaching martial arts in general and in combat in particular. Demonstrations and battles are not allowed without appropriate protective equipment! These are usually inexpensive shields compared to the physical damage they prevent. Also, there is no insurance without protective equipment! When striking a punching bag, be it a jab, cross, hook, or uppercut, boxing gloves should be used. It is recommended for full contact to use a body protector that maintains the integrity of the ribs. Also, shields for the head, teeth, groin, and legs are recommended.

It is very important to practice Self-Defense using rubber training knives and even more important during training to wear appropriate protective equipment: such as glasses designed to protect the eyes; a body protector; a Head guard against receiving an unwanted blow. The following is a list of recommended equipment for knife defense studies:

With what equipment is it recommended to practice Self-Defense at home?

To learn Self-Defense, one needs to practice the same thing, many times over. This is not a theoretical area compared to other martial arts where one can learn from a trainer by watching directly through a computer. So practice and interaction are of the utmost importance. Although, it is worth it and even recommended to work at home on punches and kicks, strength training, etc. For this purpose, it is possible to purchase minimal personal equipment that does not take up much space at home. Prepares physically for classes in the section. It also improves the following parameters: Strength, flexibility, cardiopulmonary endurance, and more.

Using a yoga mat, abdominal muscles can be improved; Training weights are to improve muscle strength; Using an adjustable strength bench can strengthen chest muscles by lifting weights; A free-standing punching bag is a perfect solution for punching and kicking improvement at home ... Below is a list of recommended equipment for home exercise:

Home training is recommended to be performed under the supervision of a certified trainer. It is recommended to avoid exercising alone at home!

How important is cardiopulmonary endurance in Self-Defense workouts?

First of all, this is health, and secondly, in a battle that does not end in a short time, the one who has cardiopulmonary endurance wins. To improve cardiopulmonary endurance, it is recommended to take brisk walks, combined with running, to increase and decrease the pace. These runs can be done outdoors, on the coast, on a Treadmill, or on a Home spinning bike. Recommended: Wear suitable shoes while running, and document and monitor your calorie burn and heart rate with your Smartwatch. Also, with the help of this it is very easy to see improvements in cardiopulmonary endurance, In fact, all your actions are recorded using a computer, and there is a training history. The following is a list of recommended personal equipment for home workouts, for developing cardiopulmonary endurance, and for monitoring and controlling progress:

Home training is recommended to be performed under the supervision of a certified trainer. It is recommended to avoid exercising alone at home!

Summary: Stick Blow Analysis From Above: In Top Israeli Methods for Self-Defense, Second Article

In this article, a comparison was made between two top self-defense techniques against a stick attack from above and diagonally. When the purpose of the article is not to say what the better way is but to analyze different ways of self-defense against this threat. This article is a continuation of our previous article on the topic of Top Self-Defense techniques from stick attack: In Israeli Krav-Maga, the first article, therefore it is recommended to read it before this article. During a scanning technique, it became clear to us that, in the KALAH method there is a reference to attacking a stick with both hands, in the style of a baseball bat which we did not find in well known Krav-Maga method. Another difference is in the victim's way of self-defense while counter-attacking. That is, it is with the hands bent and raised up to keep the face of the victim. Although in Israeli Krav-Maga it is customary to disarm the stick through the inward movement of the shoulder, in Krav-Maga schools in Europe and around the world they also work with stick disarming techniques similar to the KALAH method. When, a method of disarming a stick this method has a significant advantage when it comes to a sharp stick made of the iron, machete, and any shape of the stick which may cut the hand or ribs during disarming from the attacker.
