Navratri means "nine nights" in Sanskrit. It is a festival that is celebrated twice a year, once in the spring (Chaitra Navratri) and once in the autumn (Sharad Navratri). The latter is more popular and falls in the month of Ashvin (September-October) in the Gregorian calendar.

Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who represents the supreme power of the universe. She is also known as Shakti, or the cosmic energy that pervades everything. She has nine forms or aspects, each with a different name, appearance, attribute and function. These are:

The colours are believed to have positive effects on the mind, body and spirit of the worshippers.

The Story Behind Navratri and Durga Puja

Navratri is also celebrated as Durga Puja, especially in the eastern and northeastern parts of India. Durga Puja commemorates the epic battle between Durga and Mahishasura, the buffalo-demon who had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by any man or god. He used his power to terrorize the three worlds of heaven, earth and hell, and even challenged the authority of Lord Indra, the king of gods.

The gods were helpless against Mahishasura, and they approached Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva for help. They decided to create a new goddess from their combined energies, who would be powerful enough to defeat Mahishasura. Thus, Durga was born, with ten arms, each holding a weapon given by a different god. She also rode a lion, which was a gift from Himalaya, the king of mountains.

Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine days and nights, and finally killed him on the tenth day, which is called Vijayadashami or Dussehra. This day marks the triumph of good over evil, and is celebrated with great pomp and fervour across India. People burn effigies of Mahishasura and Ravana (another demon king who was defeated by Lord Rama on the same day) and exchange sweets and gifts.
