Buy Pol Roger Champagne

That first sale for Pol Roger came in 1849, but by 1853 things were moving in earnest. From the very beginning, Pol Roger tried to tailor his creations to the English market, focusing on drier champagnes and showcasing a shrew business mind in the process. Pol passed away from pneumonia in 1899, but his two sons were ready to take Pol Roger Champagne to the next level.

The 20th century was one of the most tumultuous in human history, but it was going to take more than the various events of the globe to stop the momentum of Pol-Roger. International celebrity was forthcoming, a growing reputation that managed to survive prohibition, the Russian Revolution, two World Wars and all the rest, as the creation of an 18-year-old prodigy became a name synonymous with everything that is great about Pol Roger champagne; the pomp and circumstance, the elegance, the luxury and above all the taste.

A straw yellow color and an intense foaming. The scent is powerful, initially with hints of pear and mango followed by floral scents of honeysuckle, jasmine and vanilla. The palate is well balanced between fruit and freshness. Hints of stewed fruit (apricot) in combination with beeswax and acacia honey. A long fruity finale with spicy touches. A champagne to drink as an aperitif, but also goes well throughout a meal.

Pol Roger was established in 1849 and remains proudly independent and family-owned to this day. One of the smaller houses in Aÿ France, Pol Roger is known for its quality and elegance. It owns 87 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Vallée d'Epernay and the Côte des Blancs and has 7km of cellars below the streets of Epernay. These cellars are amongst the deepest and coolest cellars in the region - a fact which contributes to the slow maturation of the champagne and the creation of fine, persistent bubbles which are the hallmark of all their champagnes.

Pol Roger is the champagne of "gentlemen" as Jean-Paul Kauffman wrote in his book "Voyage en Champagne". For sure, it is the official champagne of the royal court of England. It was also the champagne of Sir Winston Churchill, a cuvée is dedicated to him!

It is one of the last great Champagne Houses that is both family-owned and independent. The champagnes of the House are defined by their roundness as well as their purity, regularity and intensity of their aromas.

In the cellar, malolactic fermentation is systematic in order to bring roundness to the champagnes; the cold settling preserves the intensity and the freshness of the aromas. The remuage (inclination and position change of the bottles in the cellar) of all the champagnes of the house is done manually, even nowadays!

Pol Roger produces about 1.6 million bottles every year, of which nearly 80% is exported. Great Britain absorbs 20% of abroad sales. The house remains extremely renowned, rightly so. It is often considered as one of the best houses from Champagne, highly appreciated by both amateurs and professional tasters. And at iDealwine also, we are big fans of these wonderful champagnes!

The Blanc de Blancs cuvée is a vintage champagne, with Chardonnays from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs. It is aged for 9 years in the Pol Roger cellars. Its very elegant nose reveals aromas of fresh butter, quince and citrus, with light floral and smoked notes. The attack is fresh and the palate balanced, characterized by aromas of yellow fruits. The very long finish reveals brioche aromas.

At Pol Roger, many things are still done by hand. For example, grapes are harvested by hand and the bottles are supposedly turned manually. For men, the so called remueurs move about 40,000 bottles a day so the yeast can accumulate in the bottle neck. The labels are attached by hand and the cases are put together manually. Despite all this respect for traditional techniques, within the last decades, Pol Roger has modernized many functions in the basement in order to continue delivering top notch quality champagne. However, the family is still reluctant to increase production because they fear a decline in quality.

In 1849, when Pol Roger was just 18 years old, he made his first wine sale. His business grew rapidly from there and, in 1855, he noticed that the English preferred brut champagne. From then on, this is what he focussed on producing.

Our selection of Pol Roger gift sets is quite extensive. There are individual bottles and cases of champagne, as well as magnums, gifts that come with truffles, and sets that include a lovely display box.

Brought out in 2008, this cuvée is above all an exercise in the House style, where we have endeavoured to achieve a wine in its most natural state whilst respecting the spirit of the different champagnes they produce. Seeking to closely guard the authentic expression of the diversity of terroirs, this undosed champagne is produced from the perfect balance between the three grape varieties, blended in equal proportions. The achievement of such a balance and structure has been the fruit of a long lasting labour. The choice of the cuvées for blending and of the ageing period of at least four years required all the rigour reflected in this wine.

Magnum of Pol Roger Magnum Sir Winston Churchill A Magnum of Magnum of Pol Roger Magnum Sir Winston Churchill (1.5 litres). Pol Roger's Magnum of Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2009 Champagne was made in his honour. Sir Winston Churchill was Pol Roger's most illustrious devotee and customer. The blend is a closely guarded family secret but from tasting it is likely that the champagne features about 70-80 Pinot Noir with the remainder made up from Chardonnay.

All the know-how of Pol Roger is revealed in its ability to reproduce each year a blend which is consistent in style and in quality. Elegant and refined, the cuvée Brut Réserve is the champagne of all occasions. The Brut Réserve is a blend in equal parts of the three champenois grape varieties: pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay from 30 different crus. 25% reserve wines are used to produce this cuvée:

A Magnum of Pol Roger Brut Reserve From the favourite Champagne house of Winston Churchill comes this beautifully golden straw yellow champagne. While not being overly fizzy or foamy this champagnes fine bubbles just keep sparkling. A bouquet of floral and ripe fruit aromas mesh well with its light oaky roasted aroma. Pol Roger Reserves rich vinous grapey flavour is thirst-quenching on the palate with a superb taste of brioche. A suggestion of sweetness adds to its very smooth silky texture. Its strong fruity taste becomes more and more toasted over time leading to a very long finish. Composed of more than 30 base wines drawn from at least two vintages Pol Roger Reserve is never realsed until at least 3 years old.

As champagne goes, 1914 was a superlative year when the warmest of summers left the richest of grapes. As war goes, gunfire could be heard just beyond the hills and most men were off fighting in the horrors of World War I. 041b061a72
