Buy Turkish Flag

The flags that represent the nation of Turkey are direct descendants of the Ottoman Empire's flags. Turkey flags display a white star and crescent on a solid red field, a design that dates back at least as far as the 18th century. The flag's long history makes it one of the only national flags to be used by more than one country without any significant changes.

The star and crescent first came to represent the Ottoman Empire in the middle of the 18th century, when it was adopted by order of Sultan Mustafa III, although it did not find a place on their flags until slightly after his reign ended. The crescent dates back much farther than the star. Legends say that the empire's founder, Osman, saw a vision of a crescent moon rising from a man's heart when he was trying to marry that man's daughter. Historian have noted that the symbol is even older than that, and that it has been associated with Turkish people throughout the vast majority of their history.

The Ottoman Empire abolished the individuals standards of its provincial governors as part of a set of reforms during the 19th century, and it adopted the familiar red and white flag of modern Turkey at the same time. The red color was chosen specifically to mark it as a civil flag, in contrast to the green flags that were used to represent Islamic organizations. The Ottoman Empire broke apart less than a century later after the first world war, but Turkey kept the flag as it took the old empire's place. The precise shade of red and measurements to be used in Turkey flags was established by law in 1936, and they have remained the same to this day.

The flag is often called al bayrak (the red flag) and referred to as al sancak (the red banner) in the Turkish national anthem. The current design of the Turkish flag is based on the late Ottoman flag, which had acquired its final design in 1844. The measures, geometric proportions, and exact tone of red of the flag of Turkey were legally standardized with the Turkish Flag Law on May 29, 1936.

Some believe the origin of the flag derives historically from Ottomans who sometimes referred to a legendary dream of the founder of the Ottoman house, Osman I, in which he is reported to have seen a moon rising from the breast of a qadi whose daughter he sought to marry. "When full, it descended into his own breast. Then from his loins there sprang a tree, which as it grew came to cover the whole world with the shadow of its green and beautiful branches." Beneath it Osman saw the world spread out before him, surmounted by the crescent.

The flag of Türkiye is a red flag with a white crescent moon and a star in its centre. The current design of the Turkish flag is directly derived from the late Ottoman flag, which had acquired its final form in 1844.

Ottomans used several different designs, most of them featuring one or more crescents, for different purposes, such as the flag with green background signifying the caliphate. During the late imperial period, the distinctive use of the color red for secular and green for religious institutions became an established practice.

In 1844, the eight-pointed star was replaced with a five-pointed star and the flag reached the form of the present Turkish flag; Red was the colour of the Western Turks. In the 14th century red became the colour of the Ottoman Empire.

Providing Turkey with air and missile defenses has been an important mission especially since the Gulf War when Turkey asked NATO for the first time to send air defenses to protect them from possible retaliatory SCUD missile strikes from Saddam Hussein. The United States, Germany, and the Netherlands heeded the call, each deploying Patriot missile systems under a NATO flag. The Patriot air and missile defense system was designed during the Cold War with an air defense mission but earned fame during the Gulf War as a point missile defense system against SCUDs. Afterwards, it became the benchmark to meet for air and missile defense systems. From that point on, Turkey approached NATO for air and missile defense whenever their neighborhood got hot, most recently in 2013 during the fighting in Syria, when NATO allies deployed the Patriot or the Eurosam SAMP/T missile defense systems to the Turkish border.

The flag that eventually became the Turkish national flag was adopted by the navy in June 1793, however back then the star had eight instead of five points. Around the year 1844, an effort was undertaken to reduce the number of star points. On June 5, 1936, following the revolution led by Atatürk, who had proclaimed a republic in 1923 following the fall of the Ottoman dynasty, the flag design was approved once again as the Turkish national banner. This version has remained in use ever since.

The Turks enjoy commemorating various national holidays, including Republic Day and the anniversary of military achievements. On patriotic holidays, citizens take to the streets to wave the flag of Turkey and rejoice. During other events, such as during protests or memorial services, the flag is used less ceremoniously. Flags may be draped over statues and monuments, and patriotic music may be played. The flag and a picture of Atatürk are shown on television screens during these celebrations as well. In commemoration of significant dates or in tribute to the victims of tragedies, the flag may also be flown at half-staff. 041b061a72
